Whats the trick to double tapping

I can shoot fairly accurately and am getting quicker but double taps elude me.

I seem to be trying to aim or something between shots and its slowing me down.

Any suggestions.

I just took my CCW handgun course this week, and my instructor taught me something I didn't know (I'm fairly new to handguns, so forgive me if this is common knowledge).

On an auto pistol the trigger only has to be very slightly released in order to reset it. You can feel the click. When you shoot, follow-through by keeping your eyes over the sights and the gun on the target -- DON'T release the trigger until you are ready to fire again, then release it slowly until you learn to feel the "click". When you get used to this you can fire more quickly and more accurately by shortening the trigger pull. Perhaps this is something to do with the "double tap"?

PS - I learned that my Kel-Tec PF-9 would not reset the trigger this way, so I sold it this week and got a Glock 19 -- what I should have got in the first place.

Thanks

I've got a soft reset on my pistol as well. I'll focus on it next time out.

That's only for single-action autos. A Glock 19 is neither fish nor fowl, and double taps don't seem to work as well as with single action, at least for me.

Re: Whats the trick to double tapping

Grip and consistent trigger pull are necessary to do good double taps.

a good while back I posted a series of pics on the proper way to do a two handed grip

I included descriptions of pressure and how to hold, hopefully you can find that series by searching.

Trigger pull - consistent trigger pull is pulling straight back with the pad on the tip of the finger - key here is to pull straight back - most guns you can practice dry firing -

You also have to hold the firearm firmly, break your elbows slightly - your forearms and arms should act as shock absorbers and the gun should come right back to the point of aim for the second shot.

It might help you to go right up to a berm - place you can shoot and doesn't matter if you miss horrendously - just keep your shots in the berm - and practice the form while not worrying about the targert.

Most people never learn a good trigger pull and that hurts them even more on a double tap

here's a link to the thread

Note that if are gripping the gun firmly with both hands - think of your two handed grip as a vise for the gun - two things will occur -

one - the gun will return to the same spot after recoil.

two - the act of gripping the gun firmly will also give you better trigger control - I disagree strongly with SLV's CCW instructor on trigger pull - gotta be one swift sure motion with follow thru and quickly off - I believe that what the CCW instructor is saying may do well mechanically for some individuals but mentally and physically is a poor approach. That not releasing the trigger until you are ready to fire - is _not_ what I would recommend. Although, in this case - slv is likley better off with the Glock anyhow.

Many beginning shooters do not grip the gun tightly enough - should be white knuckles on both hands - grip it so tight you will shake a little, then back off.

This also helps control the your accuracy of fire and lessens the effect of recoil.

When reviewing videotapes of my matches for the purpose of improviment- everytime I would see a little more muzzle flip during recoil where I slacked off on the hold slightly - often there was a loss of points or dropped shot. I learned to keep a firm grip alla time.

The tighter grip also makes the perceived trigger pull lighter -

to sum up -

Use the grip indicated in the other thread, hold the gun really firmly, pull straight back with the tip of the trigger - also - learn to do a mental follow thru back with the trigger past the point of release -

If you do the above, it will increase your accuracy not only with the double taps, but also all around

The instructor just recommended the waiting as part of the practice drills. He claimed that with practice a person would be faster (and more accurate) with only the trigger reset rather than a trigger release. It was a muscle memory drill.

Now that's funny... as I was reading this I was wondering what EA is shooting and thinking to myself that with it's low bore axis and 16lbs Wolff spring my CZ-75B is very tame in regards to muzzle flip. I always shoot with the trigger reset, even makes a difference with my AK. The CZ-85 Combat is probably one of the most overlooked and underated combat autos out there, with its factory overtravel adjustment it is just about perfect for double taps.

Re: Whats the trick to double tapping

Shoot a .45 or .44 caliber, with flat point, wide meplat bullets and end the fight you anticipate with one shot.

Each to their own, but EA, if you are coming here, to this forum, asking your questions; you are really handicapping yourself. As in "capping" yourself.

Why not join a gun forum and get some quality advice?

why worry about it?

2 in center mass, one in the melon.

in a life or death situation, focus on actually hitting what you're aiming at.

train for real life situations instead

Re: Whats the trick to double tapping

Focus on front sight--rear sight and target will be a little blurry...

fingertip, not knuckle, on trigger...

weak hand index finger alongside frame, pointing downrange...

lock your wrist--to facilitate recoil absorption, prevent limp-wristing, get you back on target quicker...

after first shot, release trigger just enough to reset it...

start slowly, gradually increasing speed...

practice, practice, practice...

Good advice. Also avoid looking at the dots on your sights, for most people they are a distraction, look at the site profile itself to center everything. This helps my accuracy a lot. I think the dots are only somewhat useful in low light conditions.

I'm having trouble posting the vid, embedding has been disabled.

Click the link and then watch the one titled; How to shoot a "double tap"
2:38 in length.

"How to grip a pistol" is also very informative. Do yourself a favor and check out the Shootingcoach vids.

Re: Whats the trick to double tapping

Draw, flash sight picture, press (or compressed squeeze).
The gun recoils, the instant the gun come down off recoil,
squeeze again ( without getting the flash sight picture).
Need a proper grip, proper wrist and forearm tension and good trigger control.
Also ,must not blink during the initial shot, both eyes have to stay open during the
whole process.
